The Dan Snyder Memorial Scholarship will be presented once again this year. In 2010 there will be three scholarship award opportunities.Each $1,100.00 scholarship will be awarded to one recipient from the following categories: “Elmira Sugar Kings”, “Woolwich Minor Hockey” and a “Woolwich Community at Large athlete”.
In October 2003, local hockey hero Dan Snyder succumbed to injuries as a result of a car crash in Atlanta, Georgia.Shortly thereafter, using funds raised by the NHLPA and other donors, the Dan Snyder Memorial Scholarship Fund was born.
We are currently soliciting nominations of candidates who are residents of the Township of Woolwich who display Dan’s characteristics of determination, desire, good sportsmanship and community involvement. All successful candidates must be enrolled in a qualified accredited post secondary institution and funds are deposited directly to the school the recipient will attend that fall, under the direction of the K-W Community Foundation.

Chad is a resident of St. Jacobs and played for the Kings for over 2 years. He was a tem leader and a very enthusiastic supporter of team activities off the ice, such as the Hungryman Breakfast at the Legion and the Woolwich Community Services Christmas food drive. Chad was a very hard working forward and graduated from the Kings at the end of the 07-08 season. Chad is continuing his studies at Wilfred Laurier University in the Business Program.
Damien Parent - Woolwich Minor Hockey
Damien was nominated by his Midget hockey coaches for his enthusiasm and dedication to his team in Woolwich Minor Hockey. As an assistant captain, he led by example by never missing a practice and winning the team scoring title. Damien volunteers at Pinehaven Nursing Home and is a honour student. He will be attending the University of Waterloo this September for his first year in the Business Program.
Elizabeth Webb - Woolwich Community Open
Elizabeth was nominated by the Vice Principal at EDSS, who was also her soccer coach. Elizabeth's talent, enthusiasm, hard work, and sportsmanship made her a team leader on and off the field. Her positive attitude will help her attain her goal of becoming a chef when she attends George Brown College for her first semester this September in the Culinary Management Program.
2007
Garrett Rank - Woolwich Community Open
Garrett was nominated by Steve Karn, his EDSS Physical Education teacher and coach. Garrett played minor hockey in Woolwich and started and finished his Jr. B career with the Kings. He has however turned many heads with his exceptional talent on the golf course. He played on the high school team and led them to the Central Western Ontario Finals each year he played. Garrett is a gracious golfer who encourages his team mates and opponents to do their best. He has won numerous tournaments and in 2006, represented Canada the the Fife Matches in Scotland. Garrett is pursuing an economics degree in the Arts and Business Department at the University of Waterloo.
Brad Shantz - Woolwich Minor Hockey
Brad is a graduate of the Woolwich Minor Hockey system having played since Novice at the rep level. His leadership skills and passion made him a respected team mate and helped him become a better coach. Playing and coaching many different sports such as soccer, swimming and volleyball along with hockey, have made Brad an excellent role model for younger kids. He is an A student and is pursuing his bachelor of medical science degree at the University of Western Ontario. Brad hopes to be accepted to Med School and would like a career in paediatrics or sports medecine and someday return as a practitioner to Elmira.
Brock Zinken - Elmira Sugar Kings
Brock is a resident of Linwood and was a member of the Elmira Sugar Kings for his entire four year Junior B career. During that time, he won a league scholarship and was named to the all star team twice. A hard working, dependable forward, Brock was also a good leader on and off the ice. Brock is a graduate of Conestoga College and is pursuing his Business Economics degree at the University of Windsor where he also hopes to play some hockey.
